Dr Usman Ashraf is a neurologist with subspecialty expertise in headache. He completed the Brennan-Lynch Headache Fellowship at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, one of only two headache fellowships in Australia, followed by a Clinical Research Fellowship with the world-leading Headache Group at King’s College London under the guidance of Professor Peter Goadsby. During this time, he also undertook an observership with the paediatric headache service at Greater Ormond Street Hospital. He is currently a Conjoint Lecturer with The University of Sydney.

After obtaining his medical degree from Western Sydney University, he completed a Master of Medicine (Clinical Neurophysiology) at The University of Sydney. He undertook medical and neurology training across a range of tertiary hospitals in New South Wales, including Westmead Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and St Vincent’s Hospital. Dr Ashraf is actively engaged in a broad scope of research. He has multiple publications in high impact medical journals and has presented at both national and international conferences. He is currently a peer reviewer for Cephalalgia, the flagship journal of the International Headache Society.

Teaching has been a cornerstone throughout Dr Ashraf’s career. He has held conjoint positions with Western Sydney University, The University of Sydney, University of New South Wales and University of Notre Dame Australia and has won multiple teaching awards, including Tutor of the Year from the St Vincent’s Clinical School of University of Notre Dame Australia as well as a Conjoint Teaching Award from University of New South Wales. Dr Ashraf was nominated for both the Tara MacKenzie Award for Best Educator and The Mentorship and Support Award at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Dr Ashraf is passionate about his patients receiving the best care possible and has extensive experience in the latest evidence-based treatments in headache disorders as well as interventional treatment with greater occipital nerve blocks and Botox. Most importantly, he believes in an individualised approach where every patient has a right to be heard and is given the time and attention to understand their disease and to formulate a management plan to help achieve their health goals.

He is a member of the International Headache Society, the Australia and New Zealand Headache Society, the Australia and New Zealand Association of Neurologists and the American Academy of Neurology. He has also volunteered for Streetside Medics.
